village archaeology

Bit of a query. If you can access Google maps then use the satellite or earth facility to look at Walsingham.

Check the corner of the field between Egmere Road and Egmere side of the Old Wells Road (30 yards up from the mini railway station)
and you will see what looks like a rectangular marking.

Is it the site of a former building ?

If so, it would have been quite a substantial construction given that it is about half the size of
a football pitch and may have religious connections as it lies in a roughly east to west direction.

Within and around the village there is a fair amount of archeaological evidence of both a

Roman temple

and a Saxon cemetery

which suggests there has been activity here since the

Palaeolithic period..

The Google map also shows the site of the former All Saints church in Great Walsingham.
If you take the road from Manor House along Westgate Road the foundations of the church can still be seen in the field,
on the west side of the road

Further evidence of much earlier habitation in the village can be seen in the detailed markings in both the fields
on the Gt Walsingham side of the River Stiffkey at the ford.

Complex markings can be seen from the air on the Wighton side field

Most likely they are tracks leading to the mill that was located close to Wrights Carrs.

In the field opposite a stump of flint masonary can be seen. It is believed that it may be part of a gateway
to the medieval site that precedes Berry Hall. The field also has clear evidence (foundations) of medieval buildings.
