The Regimental History records:
"The 4th Battalion were part of 190 Brigade, and were taking part in the Arras offensive which began in April.
While resting the Battalion received urgent orders to move up to the front line on 28 April.
A composite battalion of the 7th Royal Fusiliers and 4th Bedfords moved into assembly positions
(under orders of the Brigade Commander 188th Brigade)
to attack the Oppy trench system from railway to 500 yards north of the railway on the left.
The attack commenced at dawn (29 April), and the Battalion reached its objective,
was counter-attacked and driven out, but attacked again, took the trench,
and consolidated at about 11 a.m.
It was heavily shelled all day, but was relieved by the 1st HAC at night,
and on the 30th moved into tents near Ruclincourt".
Herbert would have been killed in that attack
